Frequently Asked Questions
How does therapy work? What do I have to do in the session? What is it like in counselling?
The therapeutic process is tailored to your needs, circumstances, and goals. It is also a collaborative, interactive process of working towards your goals. Treatment will depend on what you wish to accomplish and how comfortable you are with discussing areas of vulnerability.
The first appointment is often slightly different from the typical therapy session. I will ask questions about various topics to better understand your needs and identify your therapeutic goals. At the end of the intake process, we will determine how often you want to meet (i.e., once per week, once biweekly, etc.).
At the beginning of each session, I usually summarize what was discussed at the previous session, ask what has come up for you since we last spoke and ask what is going better. This provides an opportunity to revisit the last session from a different perspective and to address any questions that may have been brought up in the process. On the other hand, some clients arrive at therapy with specific questions or topics they prefer to address; therefore, a session may begin with addressing those concerns.
Your feedback is always welcomed throughout our therapeutic relationship as it is a crucial part of the therapeutic process. So, I'd like to invite you to share, at any time, concerns or ask questions you may have and what you would like more or less of.
How long should I come for counselling?
Every individual’s circumstances are unique. Therefore, the length of time required to achieve your therapeutic goals depends on a multitude of factors, such as your level of engagement and motivation, the complexity of your circumstances and intended outcome, unforeseen circumstances, life experiences, skill sets, available support system, and the factors that drove you to seek therapy in the first place.
How long are the sessions?
Sessions are typically held for 60 minutes. However, some individuals may require longer sessions. EMDR sessions are typically 90 to 120 minutes in length.
How long are assessments?
Each assessment includes a detailed clinical interview, a review of documentation, administration of standardized tests, a feedback session, and report writing.
Does my insurance cover psychology services?
Many private insurance, health benefits companies, and employee benefits cover part or all of the psychological services. Please consult with your insurance company or employer for coverage details. A receipt with my registration numbers is issued at the end of each appointment that you can submit to your insurance or health benefits provider for reimbursement.
